“Strive to live in peace with everybody and pursue that consecration and holiness without which no one will [ever] see the Lord.”
Dear people of God, I read sometime in December 2019 ago of a police inspector in Nigeria who shot and killed his colleague, a corporal, and the same shot injured another colleague, a deputy Superintendent of police after which the police inspector took his own life.
What could have led to such violence?
I also read of another unfortunate story of a lady killed December 25, 2019, Christmas Day, by her husband who had beaten her to a coma and then ran away after discovering what he had done. The police have since found and arrested him.
Reports have it that the man was fond of beating his late wife at the slightest provocation, which has eventually led to her death in this latest incident.
Again, what could have caused this incessant violence?
Medical experts claim that humans have 2 sections of the brain, the emotional brain and the logical brain. The logical brain makes us reason when things are normal and there is no emergency while the emotional brain makes us act in an emergency BEFORE reasoning.
Examples of emergency situations for humans are hunger (leads some to steal), lust (leads some to rape), anger, loneliness, danger, etc.
It is claimed that most decisions, up to 90% of them we take are as a result of the emotional brain kicking in and not the logical brain.
This explains why the inspector and the wife beater acted before reasoning. Their emotional brains kicked in and then after their act, it still made the inspector take his life and the wife beater take to his heels to escape his murder of his spouse.
However, the decisions they took happened in their minds, that is, the subconscious part of it, because if it happened in the conscious part of their minds, they both would not have taken such irrational decisions.
The Bible in today’s lead text tells us to pursue peace with all humans and holiness without which no human would ever see the Lord.
Every human being is a spirit, has a soul, and lives in a body. The soul comprises your mind, will and emotion.
This means the mind, a part of the soul, is where decisions are taken on everything we do in life. How does one therefore control the soul to ensure only the right decisions are taken?
Let us see the answer in God’s Word in James 1:21-22, “So get rid of all uncleanness and the rampant outgrowth of wickedness, and in a humble (gentle, modest) spirit receive and welcome the Word which implanted and rooted [in your hearts] contains the power to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].”
This Scripture tells us that it is the implanted and rooted Word of God that contains the power to save a person’s soul. How does God’s Word become implanted and rooted in a person? It is by constant study and meditation.
We are also told to be doers of the Word, that is, to obey what the Word says and not just mere listeners. The Word of God is Spirit and Life (John 6:63) and can only affect a person who studies, meditates and does what it says.
Take special note, however, that James’ letter, though inspired by God’s Holy Spirit (as all other Scriptures) is addressed to Christian Believers and not every person.
So for you to be able to control your emotions/will/mind, God’s Holy Spirit must first become part of you through Salvation found ONLY in the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is this same Holy Spirit of God that would give you a genuine love for God’s Word, would explain it to you as you study, meditate and obey what it says to become rooted in your heart to save your soul to guide you to take only rational decisions that please God.
There is no other way to achieve this except as the Holy Bible has stated.
This is why Christianity is God’s ONLY acceptable way of life for every human being on this earth.
This is why the Lord Jesus Christ has commanded Christians all over the world who have the Truth to take this same Truth of the Gospel to a world of lost souls still under the control of the devil (1 John 5:19 (AMPC) to let them know there is a Way of Salvation and that Way is the Lord Jesus Christ – John 14:6.
May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Precious Name, Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
