There are times I come across statements on social media made by my fellow Nigerians who say with all the religion in Nigeria, why is the country still underdeveloped? The people who usually ask this question are those who believe religion is the cause of the problem in the world, especially in Africa. Such people also claim that in developed countries, there is not much focus on religion but a lot of progress is made by the governments of these countries especially as it concerns the welfare of citizens. Dear friend, though this submission may seem true, the fact remains that every nation on earth has its own problems that may be similar to or different from those of another nation. For instance, in Europe and North America, we keep reading and hearing of people of different ages who just go on a shooting spree killing many innocent people in schools, restaurants, and other public places. There are many religions in the world. Majority of them emphasize right living and generosity towards others. In essence, they preach good works of men. However, while this is very good, one fundamental point is missing in all but ONE of these religions - these good works ALONE are unable to guarantee adherents entry into eternity in heaven. You can sell all your property to give to the poor; you can sacrifice your time, money and other resources in support of others and engage in many other good works. Dear friends, today Saturday, February 14, 2015, many people in different parts of the world will celebrate Valentine's Day, also known as lovers' day. However, while some will engage in simple acts of love like sending greeting cards, flowers, gifts, etc, what many will engage in, especially unmarried people, are immoral and unholy acts - fornication, adultery, alcohol, drunkenness, etc. As usual, majority of those engaging in these acts are not bothered about the history of the feast of Valentine and have never bothered to find out - all they are interested in are the "fun" parts of the event. In the Bible incident involving Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who were important officials in Babylon and colleagues of Daniel who were all Jews in Babylonian captivity, we are told how the then King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon set up an idol and commanded everyone in the province to fall down and worship the image at the sound of music. The king also decreed that anyone who failed to obey would be cast into a fiery furnace to die there. Some people in Babylon went to report to the King that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to comply with his directive concerning worship of the idol. The king was furious, sent for the men and warned them to comply with his directive or face death in the fiery furnace since no god would be able to deliver them. I had a discussion yesterday with a man who has spent the last 20 years in the United States of America  where  he first went as a Green Card Lottery winner and is now a citizen. He came on a two week vacation to his home country Nigeria and returned to the U.S. yesterday. This man told me how hard he works for 16 hours daily, how after paying his taxes, rent, laundry, fueling, telephone, lighting and other bills what he has left is about $15 USD, which means he has no savings every month living pay check to pay check. Even his flight to and from Nigeria was paid for by his son. He told me how this was his first vacation in 20 years and how it included his sick leave and off day. He said he works Saturdays, Sundays and even on public holidays. Finally, he told me he could not see himself continuing this life for the next 7 years.
