7 For if that first covenant had been without defect, there would have been no room for another one or an attempt to institute another one.”
Dear people of God, a number of Christians do not really understand the difference between the Old Testament and New Testament of the Holy Bible.
This is especially true for those who pray for their human enemies to die and quote the old testament to justify their action.
I will now go ahead and list some major differences between the Old and New Testaments:
(1) The Old Testament was the covenant God instituted with the Jewish people or the Israelites in the wilderness when they came out of 430 years or 4 generations of slavery in Egypt. The New Testament is the EVERLASTING covenant God has instituted with every human being in this world who believes and accepts Jesus Christ as Redeemer, Saviour and Lord of his life.
(2) The Old Testament is based on the Jewish Law or Judaism while the New Testament is based on Christianity or love.
(3) Under the Old Testament, God commanded the Jews to always atone for sin by sacrifice of animals. Under the New Testament or Christianity, Jesus Christ is the One and only Sacrifice offered for the sins of the entire world. No other sacrifice is needed.
(4) The Israelites were servants of God (Leviticus 25:55) while the Christians are sons of God and heirs of God through Jesus Christ – Galatians 4:7. This is also evident from today’s lead Holy Bible text above.
(5) Under the Old Testament, nobody had authority over the devil whereas a Christian is given authority by God in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ to tread upon snakes and scorpions and over ALL the powers of the devil and nothing shall by any means hurt him – Luke 10:19.
The powers or works of the devil include sicknesses and diseases, poverty and spiritual affliction. With His sacrificial death at the Cross of Calvary for our sins, Christ Jesus has delivered us completely from all powers of the devil – Matthew 8:17; 1 Peter 2:24; Colossians 1:13-14; Galatians 3:13.
(6) Under the Old Testament, demons could afflict someone who deliberately exposed himself to it and there was nothing the person could do. This is why ungodly people were killed to do away with their demonic affliction like the prophets of Baal.
This is also why God warned the Israelites not to have anything whatsoever to do with the cultural practices of the ungodly nations around them so that they would not engage in their ungodly practices.
Under the New Testament, however, ungodly people can hear God’s Word, respond to accept it, repent, become born again by God’s grace and become joined to Christ Jesus to become new creations.
This is the major reason why the solution to an ungodly person’s attitude today is to preach the Word of God to him because the Word of God or the Gospel is God's power working unto salvation [for deliverance from eternal death] to everyone who believes with a personal trust and a confident surrender and firm reliance, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (unbeliever) – Romans 1:16.
This is why it is absolutely wrong, ungodly and a grave sin for any Christian to pray for the death of a sinner or his so called human enemy.
What such Christian is doing is assisting the devil to get lost souls into eternal damnation in HELL.
(7) Under the Old Testament, you could only reach God through the priest. Under the New Testament, you can reach God directly by praying in the Name of Jesus Christ our High Priest – Hebrews 4:16; John 4:23-24.
This is why the temple curtains tore into 2 from top to bottom when the Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed, “It is finished” at the Cross of Calvary when He gave up His Spirit.
(8) Under the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was not given to everyone but it is FREELY given in the New Testament to all Christians, that is, to all who believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
This is another major difference because under the Old Testament, God usually spoke to people through His priests but under the New Testament, God can speak to Christians through His Word in the Bible, through the priest (or pastor) by Word of knowledge or Word of wisdom or directly through that small voice speaking to your human spirit when you are either praying or meditating on God’s Word in the Bible.
Dear friend, I trust with this information, you now understand the major differences between the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible.
Most importantly, it is evident from today’s main Holy Bible text in Hebrews 8:6-7 that the Christian is a covenant son of God whose relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ rests on better promises than the Old Testament.
It should therefore make sense for anyone reading this to become a Christian because it is the ONLY way you can successfully overcome all powers of the devil and his agents in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, live well and still enter heaven when you leave.
May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Holy Name, Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
