THE TALE BEARER AND THE FALSE TESTIFIER
There are some people who want to make
new friendship or sustain an existing one but the other person just isn’t
interested. The friend-seeker may even go to extra length to cook up stories to
attract the attention of their target friend.
Another group of people have the
habit of wanting to be the first to give a breaking news about some event and
without taking time to find out the authenticity of the news item, they quickly
go about spreading the information they just received.
Eventually, they get to discover
that the information was false and they react either by remorse or shrugging
off the information and moving on to the next great news to spread.
For some others, it may be their
rival or enemy is in some kind of trouble and it is confirmed to be true. The tale
bearer having known relishes the thought of telling about the enemy’s troubles
to anyone who cares to listen and quickly rushes to do just that. In fact, it
gives him so much joy and a sense of “victory” to speak about the enemy in such
manner.
In extreme cases, he may even give
false testimonies to ensure the enemy is punished.
There is another group of people
who would readily sell out others through false testimonies just to gain
favour. Some may see someone in danger
and rather than come out to speak the truth to save the person, they maintain
silence and are not bothered about the consequences to the person.
It may also be that the person and
someone else is in danger but the person would only speak to save himself and
tell lies to endanger the other person.
Dear friend, whatever group you
belong to above, I want you to know today that the Lord Jesus Christ is
watching every one of us and we will give an account of our actions here on
earth.
Let us see what the Holy Bible
says about these behaviours in Leviticus 19:16, “You shall not go up and down as a dispenser of
gossip and scandal among your people, nor shall you [secure yourself by false
testimony or by silence and] endanger the life of your neighbour. I am the Lord.”
You must remember that nothing is
hidden from God – Hebrews 4:13. Do not therefore give false testimonies to
damage anyone’s reputation no matter how upset you are with that person.
A Christian is called to forgive
and not to destroy another person for revenge sake.
If you are in a position to give
genuine information, not false information, that would save a person’s life,
then by all means come out and give it.
Do not give false information
because you want to help someone in danger because that is a sin. You should
rather pray to God to forgive the person, show mercy and rescue him.
Finally, do not make yourself a
tale bearer because you want to gain someone else’s attention, friendship or
favour. The best Friend anyone can have is the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the
Living God.
He cannot defraud you, he cannot
destroy your reputation, he cannot hate you, he cannot hurt you. Instead, He is
your Creator (John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16) and He loves you with perfect,
genuine love of a Father to His child.
Whatever you need, whatever issues
you have, whatever trouble you are in, just discuss with Him in prayer and be
sure that He, the Lord Jesus Christ, would respond to comfort you and provide
an answer.
If you do not yet have a
relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, today and now is a perfect time to do
so, for tomorrow may be too late.
May the good Lord bless you as you
heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Mighty Name,
Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
