IF NOT JESUS CHRIST, THEN WHO?
When the Lord Jesus Christ
used five barley loaves and two fish to feed five thousand men not counting
women and children (Matthew 14:13-21), the people were so stunned by this
miracle that they wanted to make Jesus king by force but the Lord left the place
without their notice (John 6:14-15).
The people still looked for
the Lord Jesus because they wanted more of such miracles. However, when they
had found Him, He told them something else that stunned them - that His body
was real food and His blood was real drink and whoever ate His body and drank
His blood would have eternal life and He would raise such person up on the last
day (John 6:51-56).
When the people heard this,
many of them stopped being Jesus' disciples and left because they felt the
teaching was too difficult to follow (John 6:60, 66).
Rather than call them back
to offer explanations since He meant what He said, the Lord Jesus asked His
Apostles if they too wanted to leave to which Peter responded in John 6:68-69, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have
the Words that give eternal life. And now we believe and know that You are the
Holy One who has come from God."
Dear friend, the Apostle
Peter's words are instructive and if you are yet to give your life to the Lord
Jesus Christ, there is need to meditate on this Word of God. Peter and the
other Apostles had stayed long enough with the Lord Jesus both in His public
and private life.
They had seen and witnessed
everything the Lord did during His public ministry and they had come to
understand His person and had come to believe that indeed the Lord Jesus was
the Messiah who had the Words of eternal life.
For anyone to come to
understanding of an event, the person must study it in detail and seek all
facts to come to that understanding. Without doing this diligently, it is
difficult and erroneous to speak of that event since one is not abreast of the
facts.
This is one of the reasons
the disciples of Jesus Christ left when He gave them a new teaching. They were
in too much of a hurry and missed the mark unlike Apostle Peter and others who
knew better and stayed with Jesus.
The Lord Jesus Christ said
something significant in John 6:65 "This
is the very reason I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father
makes it possible for him to do so."
As a Christian and follower
of Jesus Christ, we must seek to understand His ways and teachings and ensure
to obey it.
The reason for this is so we
can be armed with information that would help us navigate through this life
successfully and when we depart the world, we would earn the reward the Lord
Jesus has promised to His disciples, which is eternal life.
Unfortunately, there are
people, whom as the Lord Jesus Christ said, come to Him in repentance to earn
salvation but because they do not seek His ways and teachings, fall along the
way, backslide and go back to a life of sin and unrighteousness.
Jesus said in John 6:63, “What gives life is God's Spirit; man's
power is of no use at all. The Words I have spoken to you bring God's
life-giving Spirit."
We find Jesus' Words of
God's life-giving Spirit in the Holy Bible. A Christian must diligently study
the Word of God in the bible and pray for the Holy Spirit to give understanding
and also obey His teaching. Then shall the Christian have good success as the
Lord has promised (Joshua 1:8) and will be able to ask for anything of God in
Jesus' Name and receive it (John 15:7-8).
The question to ask now is,
if not Jesus, then who? Anyone who does not follow the Lord Jesus Christ is
living a very dangerous life.
Why do I say so? The Lord
Jesus Christ answers as seen in His discussion with the Pharisees in John
8:42-44 "If God really were your
Father, you would love Me, because I came from God and now I am here.
I did not come on my own authority, but He sent
Me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to
listen to My message. You are the children of your father, the devil, and you
want to follow your father's desires.
From the very beginning, he was a murderer and
has never been on the side of truth, because there is no truth in him. When he
tells a lie, he is doing what is natural to him, because he is a liar and the
father of all lies."
Dear friend, you have seen
yourself from God's Word that anyone who is not following the Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ is following the devil, even if the person claims contrary.
Therefore, all who want
eternal life must have Christ Jesus in them, by their words and deeds. Anything
short of this is pure deceit and would make satan or the devil very happy
because he wants souls to perish forever with him and his demons in hell.
Jesus Christ came to die for
our sins to reconcile mankind to God to get into heaven in eternal life. The
only time available for anyone to believe this, repent sincerely and accept
Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour is NOW, for tomorrow or later may be too late.
I urge you as always to make
up your mind for there is no gain in not following Jesus Christ. There is great
gain in following Jesus - the ONLY SOURCE OF ETERNAL LIFE.
God bless you as you heed
His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus Mighty Name, Amen.
