THE STANDARD IS THE WORD OF GOD

Judges 17:6
“In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.”

Dear people of God, two days ago I had an interesting conversation with a young man I just met.

He had told me that he believed in doing the right thing and that was because he hated injustice. When I asked him what the right thing was, he said it was doing what was right.

As we discussed further, he made me understand that he usually had problems with people because he believed in doing the right thing.

I then reminded him of the people who break traffic laws daily in Nigeria and especially in Lagos State, that is, those who drive against traffic.

I told him that these people believed they were also doing the right thing and so driving against traffic cannot be wrong for them as far as their minds were concerned.

Dear friend, just as today’s main Holy Bible text tells us, there was a time when Israel had no king and so everybody did what was right in his own eyes.

I made my new acquaintance understand that what is right in one person’s eyes may not be right in another person’s eyes and indeed, this happens daily in Nigeria where a lot of people engage in impunity in different facets of life.

When a person steals from the public treasury and shares a tiny bit of it with his kinsmen or makes a donation to his community in terms of projects – borehole, helping the less privileged, etc. he is hailed as a hero and rewarded with chieftaincy titles.

If another person gets a government appointment and refuses to steal from the public treasury, he is labelled as stingy, called foolish and described as not being sharp. Most people would not want anything to do with such an individual who refuses to steal to distribute the stolen wealth.

Dear friend, you can see that doing the right thing is relative and this depends on the person’s moral values.

I made my new acquaintance understand that the problem he was having with people was that he was assessing his own character based on how those people behaved and that was wrong.

I then told him that for all humans, there is only ONE STANDARD to assess our character, which is the infallible Word of God in the Holy Bible.

There is no other standard by which to measure God’s acceptance of a person’s character other than the Holy Bible, the Book of Life.

At this point, one may argue and say but there are other books that show people how to behave and can rightly be called the word of God. I say NO!!!!

All other books were written by humans by human wisdom. The Holy Bible is the ONLY Book written by men through inspiration by God’s Holy Spirit. It is the most complete Resource in written form for all humans.

This fact is made clear in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action),

17 So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Again, God Almighty points us to the need for every human being to pay attention to His Word and do exactly what it says in Matthew 4:4, “It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by EVERY Word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”

Dear friend, once again, I will remind you as I told my acquaintance yesterday that you must always measure your relationship with God and other humans by the standard of God’s Word in the Holy Bible.

I do not know of any other book written by God through humans in which He speaks to humans except the Holy Bible.

I do not know any human being who has sincerely, genuinely and steadfastly studied, followed and practised the teachings of the Holy Bible and whose life did not turn out excellent.

In today’s world, most human beings would certainly hate you when you genuinely follow the instructions in God’s Book of Life in the Holy Bible. However, God Himself approves of you as His child and ensures you never lack anything good because His Word says so.

This is the only thing that matters.

I therefore urge you, dear friend, to choose just one standard with which to always measure your life – the Holy Bible. Do not be carried away by approval of humans because it is deceptive.

Only God’s approval is required and it is the only guarantee of a fulfilled life here on earth and the only assurance of eternal life in the hereafter.

May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in the Mighty Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
