GRANTING PERMISSION TO RECEIVE AFFLICTION

Every affliction that befalls a human being is caused by the devil. Many people, especially Christians, are familiar with the fact that sin opens the door for satan to enter to cause affliction in a person’s life.

We see an example of this in the life of the man at the pool of Bethesda whom the Lord Jesus Christ cured of an affliction he suffered for 38 years.

Not long after curing the man, the Jewish authorities were questioning the man on his healing and then the Lord Jesus found him shortly after and had this conversation with him again in John 5:14, “Afterward, when Jesus found him in the temple, He said to him, See, you are well! Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.

Clearly, we see here that when someone commits sin, he exposes himself and gives a legal right to satan to afflict him with an infirmity.

However, it is pertinent to note that it is not always sin that opens up a person to satan’s legal right to afflict him or her. This means a person, even a righteous person, can unintentionally grant permission to satan to afflict him.

We see this in the case of Job, whom the Bible described as upright, reverently feared God Almighty and the greatest man of his time in the East – Job 1:1-3.

There are many who say it was God that permitted satan to afflict Job.

However, from Job’s own words during his affliction, we see that it was he and not God that allowed satan into his life. Yes, God permitted it but Job it was who left the door open for satan into his life and gave satan a legal right to afflict him.

Let us see proof in Job’s own words in Job 3:25-26, “For the thing which I greatly fear comes upon me, and that of which I am afraid befalls me.

26 I was not or am not at ease, nor had I or have I rest, nor was I or am I quiet, yet trouble came and still comes [upon me].”

Dear friend, you can see yourself from these verses that Job dwelt in great fear and what he feared was what eventually befell him even though he was a righteous man.

What was Job afraid of? He was afraid of affliction befalling him and his family as recorded in Job 1:5. After every feast of his children, Job would offer a sacrifice for each of his children to atone for their “sins,” which he was not sure they had committed.

Job was not sure his children had committed sin because he said “it may be that one of them has offended God” and so Job offered a sacrifice.

This action by Job was driven by fear and fear opens the door and permits, gives a legal right to satan to enter someone’s life to cause affliction. This is why Job admitted that what he greatly feared had come upon him.

For you to further understand, let us see what God’s Word tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balance mind and discipline and self-control."

From this Scripture, we can see that fear is caused by a foul spirit and God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, a calm and well-balanced mind, discipline and self-control.

So then the foul spirit of fear comes from satan, the evil one. This is why satan was able to get Job because Job opened the door through fear and once you violate God’s Word, satan is legally permitted to afflict you.

One may ask, why then does the Bible say those who are of God cannot be afflicted as recorded in Psalm 91?

I will answer, by telling you that those who are of God also know God’s Word and through God’s Word they know their rights in Christ Jesus our Lord.

One right a Christian, a child of God, has is power and authority over all schemes, afflictions and devises of the devil as Jesus gave us in Luke 10:19.

However, if you fail to exercise this God-given right, satan would capitalize on your ignorance to afflict you. Again, this is why you must study the Bible to know your rights as a Christian.

You can also give satan permission to afflict you through doubt, worry, anxiety, and even unbelief in God’s Word. All these emotions are caused by foul spirits sent by the devil.

The simple way to deal with these foul spirits is to command them to leave you immediately in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Once you feel such emotion and you give a command to the foul spirit causing it to leave in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, that spirit MUST leave because no foul spirit can stand the authority and power in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ!!

I will tell you today, dear friend, that you can only enjoy this privilege and many others when you become a genuine child of God Almighty by departing from sin and surrendering your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in righteous obedience to His commands in the Holy Bible.

I therefore invite you as you read this today and now to take an all-important decision to become a born-again Christian, a genuine child of God.

If you fail to do this, you are only putting your life at risk just as the Lord Jesus Christ told the man he healed at the pool of Bethesda in John 5:14.

There is everything to gain by sincerely following Jesus Christ and there is everything to lose by rejecting Jesus. Decide today and now for Jesus Christ, for tomorrow or later may be too late for you.

May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Powerful Name, Amen.
