RESPECT FOR THE LORD’S ANOINTED
1 Samuel 26:8-9
“Then said Abishai to David, God has given your enemy into your hands this day. Now therefore let me smite him to the earth at once with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.
9 David said to Abishai, Do not destroy him; for who can raise his hand against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless?”
Dear people of God, today’s lead Holy Bible text references the conversation David had with one of his men when they had opportunity to strike and kill Saul, the then king of Israel who all this while had been trying to kill David out of envy for David’s successes in battles with Israel’s enemies.
Despite the fact that David had two clear opportunities to strike and kill Saul (see the first one in 1 Samuel 24:1-11), he refused because he recognised Saul the king as the Lord’s anointed and gave him that respect.
All this is in spite of the fact that Saul consistently sought to kill David. What was David’s offence? It is not as if David committed any offence deserving of death.
God gave David victory over Goliath of Gath, the Philistine giant who previously tormented Israel’s army morning and evening for 40 days challenging anyone to come fight with him – 1 Samuel 17:16.
After the victory, the Israelite women sang a song of praise stating, ‘Saul has killed his thousands and David his ten thousands.’
This statement infuriated Saul the king and he became envious and sought to kill David from then on – 1 Samuel 18:7-9.
Despite all these, David neither hated nor sought revenge to take Saul’s life. He rather restrained his soldiers each time they wanted to strike Saul.
Dear friend, what is our experience today? Even when someone has done wrong deserving severe punishment, he gets offended when he is rebuked or asked to account for his misdeeds.
He could even go as far as wanting to harm his reprover. In today’s world, we see some who lay claim to Christianity who would label such people as their enemies and start praying for death for them!
Does God answer such prayers? The answer is no.
David recognised Saul as his superior, as king of Israel and as the Lord’s anointed. Rather than speak evil against Saul, David handed Saul over to God for appropriate judgement as the only Righteous Judge.
Today, we see people using all manner of verbal and written invectives against their political leaders on social media and in discussions with friends and acquaintances.
Even if you disagree with their actions, using foul language in describing their personality is offensive to God Almighty and Father of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Who either placed them or allowed them in their positions.
How do I know this? Let us examine God’s Word in Romans 13:1-2, “LET EVERY person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God's appointment. [Prov. 8:15.]
2 Therefore he who resists and sets himself up against the authorities resists what God has appointed and arranged [in divine order]. And those who resist will bring down judgment upon themselves [receiving the penalty due them].
Dear friend, you have seen yourself from God’s Word why you should watch what you say or do against the political authorities, not to talk of the ecclesiastical authorities.
What you should rather do is pray for them as God’s Word also admonishes in 1 Timothy 2:1-4.
Please do not say nobody warned you.
May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Holy Name, Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
