DON’T GIVE GOD’S GLORY TO IDOLS
2
Chronicles 25:14-15
14 After
Amaziah came back from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought their gods and
set them up to be his gods and bowed before them and burned incense to them.
15 So
the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and He sent to him a
prophet, who said, why have you sought after the gods of the people, which
could not deliver their own people out of your hand?
Dear friends, there are
some Christians who claim to believe in God but their actions show a different
belief.
In the lead Holy Bible
text above, Amaziah king of Judah came back from a battle and rather than give
God the glory for his victory over the Edomites he just conquered, he came with
the gods (idols) of Edom and set them up for worship.
Even when God sent a
prophet to ask him a valid question why these idols could not deliver the
Edomites from Amaziah, he, Amaziah, ignored the prophet’s counsel with an
insult as recorded in verse 16 of 2 Chronicles 25:
“As he was talking, the
king said to him, have we made you the king's counselor? Stop it! Why should
you be put to death? The prophet stopped but said, I know that God has
determined to destroy you, because you have done this and ignored my counsel.”
When you back up a little bit before Amaziah’s battle with the Edomites,
he, Amaziah had raised an army from Judah of 300,000 able men.
Amaziah also went and hired 100,000 soldiers from Israel for 100 talents
of silver. To give us perspective, a talent of silver today is about 33kg.
As at yesterday Friday March 8, 2019, silver sold for about $488 per kg.
A talent of silver (33kg) therefore would be $16,104 and 100 talents would be roughly
$1,610,400 today!
In spite of this huge expense Amaziah spent to hire the Israelite
soldiers he wanted to use in battle against the Edomites, God had sent a
prophet to warn Amaziah not to go to battle with the hired soldiers because he
would lose no matter how many they were since God was not with him in that plan.
Concerned about the amount of money he had spent to hire the soldiers, Amaziah
asked the prophet about this, to which the prophet said God was able to give
him, Amaziah, much more money than what he had spent.
Amaziah then took the man of God’s counsel and discharged the hired
soldiers to return home and the soldiers were angered by the sudden change in
plan. All these is recorded in 2 Chronicles 25:5-10.
However, because Amaziah
took God’s counsel from the man of God and went alone with his men to battle,
God gave him victory.
And as you can see
earlier from above, rather than give the glory for his victory to God Almighty and
Father of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Amaziah foolishly took the idols of
Edom he had conquered and brought back to his land to defile the land.
Later on, we see that
Amaziah again turned from the Lord God Almighty and this time around it cost
him his life as recorded in 2 Chronicles 25:27-28.
The lesson here, dear
friend, for Christians is that you must always consult God before undertaking
any task and when God has given you go ahead on that task and you meet sure success
because God was in the plan, always ensure to give God the glory and do not
attribute it to yourself, another human or an idol, for God would never
tolerate that.
A Word is enough for the
wise.
May the good Lord bless
you as you heed His Word this day, meditate and act on it and share with others
in Jesus’ Most Merciful Name, Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
