EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
Mark 9:23 (AMPC)
“And Jesus said, [You say to Me], If You can do
anything? [Why,] all things can be (are possible) to him who believes!”
Dear people
of God, last night I watched a documentary on cable television of a true story
of how 3 men – Tim Jenkin, Stephen Lee and Alex Moumbaris - escaped from prison
in Apartheid era South Africa in 1979.
The men
were arrested in 1976 as political prisoners having been accused of terrorism
against the government of the day and were sentenced to between 8 – 12 years.
Though these
prisoners were white men, they were part of the African National Congress (ANC)
team who were at that time fighting the repressive Apartheid Regime of the era
that was discriminating against blacks in their own land.
Now, having
studied the prison environment, two of them started a plot to escape and they
were later joined by 6 others.
The plot
initiator, Tim Jenkin had experience with door locks and how they work, so he
was able to create a wooden key that opened the door to his prison cell. The
first major obstacle was creating a key for the second door outside his prison
cell, which would only be opened from the outside.
He
initially gave up the plan but after thinking through, he came up with an idea
to create a key tied to a broom with a long wooden handle. He created the key
and whilst testing outside their cell, it opened the door but did not lock that
door and he and his colleagues were almost caught but they left it unlocked.
The guards then
came and saw it and were now blaming each other not realizing it was one
prisoner who had unlocked the door.
Next was
the creation of a key to open a 3rd door in the passage leading outside the
prison cell area, which the key to door one successfully opened during testing.
There was
now the need to create keys or test created ones on another 7 doors at
different locations within the prison to lead to the outside of the prison.
They had to
carry out each test under strict surveillance to avoid being caught by the
prison guards because if they were caught, they would have faced another 15
years’ sentence to what they were already serving.
Now, they
were able to successfully create/use existing keys to test 9 doors but never
got to test any key on the 10th and final door that opens to the outside of the
prison.
However,
for the plan to be successful, it would involve hiding inside a cupboard briefly
during which time a guard with a fixed daily routine would have played his
classical music, stood up, proceed to check the prisoners upstairs, discuss
briefly with them and then return to his office.
It was this
window of opportunity to hide that gave them the leeway to access doors 5 – 9
to create and test keys, all except door 10. Unfortunately, the cupboard could
only contain a maximum of 3 people so the other men had to give up their escape
plan for the exercise to be successful.
On the
planned day of escape, the 3 men were able to turn off the lights on their floor,
bypass the guard using the cupboard under a staircase as a hiding and
successfully reached the 10th door while one prisoner upstairs was mandated to
call the guard with the fixed routine to switch on the light and engage him in
conversation.
Unfortunately,
none of the existing keys was able to open door 10 and while they tried and
tried and tried, the prison guard had switched on the light upstairs and came
back down into his office.
This meant
the 3 men could no longer return to their prison cells but had to get out.
While the plot initiator Tim Jenkin and Stephen Lee had given up, Alex
Moumbaris took a file and started filing the lock of door 10 and by a miracle,
even though it was making sounds, the prison guard never heard it until they
were able to file the lock and open door 10!
Finally,
they opened the door and clad in civilian clothes, they walked out as free men
into the outside world but encountered 2 prison guards in conversation outside,
who looked casually in their direction and having determined in their mind that
these were civilians continued their discussion and the 3 men walked away
freely!!
Dear
friend, I have used this true story to make a very important illustration,
which is that anything anyone sets out to achieve in life is possible, just as
the Word of God has made us understand in today’s lead Holy Bible text.
Despite the
fact that the men encountered obstacle after obstacle, they were able to think
their way through each one and I personally believe God granted them Divine favour
because they were fighting a just cause against Apartheid oppression of innocent
and unharmed citizens and had been arrested as a result.
As the
saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way.
When you
believe something is possible, as long as it does not offend God Almighty,
heaven would respond to make a way by putting an idea in your mind/heart/spirit
that would give you a solution. You just have to believe it would happen.
Do you have
something you are pursuing? Tell it to God in prayer, thank God and believe He
would do it for you and watch it happen as you have believed. Never, ever, give
up on anything.
For with
God, nothing shall be impossible – Luke 1:37 (NKJV).
May the
good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others
in Jesus’ Most Powerful Name, Amen.
