DO YOU DISCUSS GOD’S WORD WITH YOUR CHILDREN?
Many Christian parents
leave the responsibility of teaching God’s Word to their children to the church
and the school their kids attend.
These parents give
excuse that they are so busy chasing material things with which to take care of
their families and so there is very little time to engage in spiritual
activities.
Let us examine God’s Word in Deuteronomy 6:5-9, “And
you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your
entire being and with all your might.
6 And these words which I am commanding you
this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then]
7 You shall whet and sharpen them
so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress
them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of
them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie
down and when you rise up.
8 And you shall bind them as a sign upon your
hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes.
9 And you shall write them upon the doorposts
of your house and on your gates.”
The summary of God’s
command here is that we should give first priority to His Word and then we,
parents, NOT the church or school should teach and impress God’s Word upon the
minds of our children and discuss it with them.
The simple reason God
says this is because the human mind is the battle field for the devil’s antics
and tricks. Once the devil is able to capture a person’s mind whether young or
old, he can do whatever he pleases with the person to commit sin against God
and end in eternal damnation if the person dies in such state.
However, it is pertinent
to note that the mind that is saturated or rooted or implanted or engrafted with
God’s Word does not provide any fertile ground for the devil’s antics for
capture to do evil.
Since it is a fully established fact that the devil
is synonymous with sin and everything evil, let us see how the Bible says a
person is tempted and commits sin in James 1:13-16, “Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted from God; for God is
incapable of being tempted by [what is] evil and He Himself tempts no one.
14 But
every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire
(lust, passions).
15 Then
the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is
fully matured, brings forth death.
16 Do
not be misled, my beloved brethren.”
Again, we can see here that the problem of
temptation and sin begins from the mind and ends in actual commission of the
act of sin when the person has succumbed to the temptation, given the devil
legal right over his mind to do whatever he (devil) pleases.
Dear friend, when you go to a church where parents
sit separately from the children to be taught God’s Word, it is YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY to engage your children after church at home to know what was
taught, what they learnt and if it is consistent with God’s Word.
Of course, you can only know if it is consistent
with God’s Word when you are yourself ground in study and meditation of God’s
Word.
If you ever discover that your children are being
taught the wrong doctrine as far as God’s Word is concerned, please do not keep
quiet but take immediate action by reporting it to the pastor and if nothing is
done, simply withdraw your children from the class where the wrong doctrine is
being taught before you lose them to the devil.
Let the children sit with you to hear God’s Word as
it is being taught from the altar.
Take note that verse 16 of James 1 warns us not to
be misled. This sounds like a simple warning because ignorance of this warning
would certainly lead to dire consequences for you, your children and family.
Take time to train your children in God’s Word and
you also lead by example in word and deed because you as a parent are the
children’s first teacher they emulate.
Always remember that we would all give account to
God as humans, parents, spouses, siblings, children to our parents and for all
positions we hold here on earth.
May the good Lord bless
you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most
Righteous Name, Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
