TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS AS A CHRISTIAN
Experts have stated that
humans think between 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts every day.
It is also estimated
that about 80% of these thoughts are negative while 95% are repetitive.
A repetitive thought
means the same thought that comes a second, third or more times.
A negative thought is
one that is focused on something wrong and a wrong assumption even when the
thing has not happened.
It is usually started by
fear of a number of things – fear of the unknown, poverty, death, old age,
people generally.
The way a person thinks
is revealed by the comments that come out of the person’s mouth or the actions
the person takes every day.
When you think negative thoughts
persistently, it leads to unpleasant consequences and realities for the person.
This is why the Bible
says in Proverbs 4:23 (GNBK), “Be careful how you
think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.
Unfortunately, many
people are not aware of this fact that the thoughts we focus on determines the
direction and ultimate outcome of our lives.
The truth is, many
people want to live a good life but they need to understand that it begins with
the dominant thoughts of your mind, the words you speak and the actions you
take as a result.
Conscious thoughts are
the ones we are aware of while subconscious thoughts are where majority of the
thinking happens and we are hardly aware but these are the ones that determine
the course of our lives.
There is therefore a
constant battle in the mind every single time on which thoughts we should allow
in and which ones not to entertain.
The Bible makes it clear
that the road to sin and death begins with a negative or bad thought that TAKES
ROOT IN OUR MINDS – James 1:12-15.
So how does a Christian
control his or her thoughts to prevent bad or negative thoughts from taking
root in the mind?
Let us see what God’s Word says concerning the
battle of the mind in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (AMPC), “For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and
blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,
5 [Inasmuch
as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up
against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the
obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),”
From this passage, we
see that the devil tries to infuse us with negative or bad thoughts to make us
sin against God but we are told to take every thought captive and make it
obedient to Jesus Christ.
So how do we achieve
this?
The simple answer is to
saturate your mind every day with God’s Word in the Holy Bible because it is
only the ROOTED OR IMPLANTED Word of God that contains the power to save a
person’s soul – James 1:21.
The soul comprises the
mind, will and emotion.
God’s Word becomes
planted in our minds (hearts as also used in the Bible) through constant,
deliberate study daily and it becomes rooted through meditation on the Word of
God.
So you see that no
Christian can successfully win the battles of daily life without the Word of
God.
When God’s Word enters
your mind through study and becomes implanted or rooted through meditation,
then your thoughts would constantly be focused on God’s Word and your words
would be based on God’s Word in every circumstance – Matthew 12:34.
Your mind then becomes spiritually
alert towards any thought that goes against the true knowledge of God and you
then take it captive and make it obedient to Jesus Christ’s Word in the Bible.
This way, your life
becomes shaped by God’s Word, your words the same and your life takes the same
direction and gives you the same outcome God desires as long as you UNCOMPROMISINGLY
obey His commandments in His Word in the Holy Bible.
Not only would you be
successful in this life and have complete victory always over the devil and his
agents, but you are assured of entry into eternal life with Christ Jesus at the
end of your stay here on earth.
Always remember that
there is power in the thoughts we think. This is why the Lord Jesus Christ
warns us in Matthew 5:28 that anyone who looks LUSTFULLY (thoughts of sleeping
with someone else) at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
The same applies to a
woman who looks lustfully at a man in her heart (or mind).
So watch what you allow
into your heart (or mind) and it is only the implanted or rooted Word of God
that can guarantee victory over evil, negative or bad thoughts.
May the good Lord bless
you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most
Powerful Name, Amen.
