DEALING WITH GUILT OF SIN
1 John 1:7-9
“But if we [really] are living and walking in the Light, as He [God Himself] is in the Light,
we have [true, unbroken] fellowship with one another, and the blood of
Jesus Christ His Son
cleanses (removes) us from all sin and
guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations].
8 If we say we have no sin [refusing to admit that we are sinners],
we delude and lead
ourselves astray, and the Truth [which the Gospel presents] is not in us [does
not dwell in our hearts].
9 If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful
and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins
[dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all
unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought,
and action].”
Dear
people of God, the above Scripture was addressed by John the Evangelist to
Christian believers.
There
are some Christian folks who have given up with trying to live above sin and have
dived headlong into sin because for them they are tired of confessing sin.
The
devil would be so glad to have them in this state of mind because the devil’s overall
intention is to ensure no human enters heaven since he has lost that
opportunity forever.
Dealing
with guilt of past sin is not an easy task.
However,
the first verse of the Holy Bible text above tells us that the blood of Jesus
Christ cleanses and removes us from all sin and guilt in all its forms and
manifestations.
The
point here is that we can surely and always rely on the blood of Jesus Christ
to deal with our sins permanently.
However,
there is the issue of first admitting that we have sinned against God whenever
it happens because ALL wrongdoing is sin as God’s Word tells us in 1 John
5:17a.
Next,
is genuine repentance and confession to God of the wrongdoing (sin) and making
a firm decision not to fall again into sin.
We
must then engage in spiritual activities that edify and build us up spiritually
so we can rely not on ourselves but the Holy Spirit to live above sin. Such
activities include fasting, prayer, study and meditation on God’s Word,
attending Christian fellowship and so on and so forth.
However,
it is pertinent to note that for every Christian believer, there is the
constant fight of faith against sin on a daily basis.
Therefore,
having understood this fact, we must ensure to examine our consciences DAILY
against the Word of God as the ONLY standard and confess sin against God in
every area of our lives – words, thoughts, actions and omissions.
When
we become born again, it is our spirit (the REAL YOU) that is joined to Jesus
Christ and renewed into a new creation by God’s Holy Spirit – 2 Corinthians
5:17.
Your
mind does not become born again. However, it is ONLY the Word of God in the
Holy Bible that contains the power to save your soul (mind, will and emotion)
and to renew your mind – James 1:21.
Your
body (or flesh) also does not become born again. You are to offer your body as
a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1) and subject your flesh to your born
again spirit because your flesh would always want to drag you into wrongdoing
(sin).
With
this information, what should be clear to you now, dear friend, is that you
cannot completely overcome sin in this world as a human being until you depart.
Note
carefully and seriously too, that this is NOT an endorsement of sin because
preachers of the doctrine of eternal security will tell you that once you are
joined to Christ, you can continue to sin because God no longer sees you but
the Lord Jesus Christ whenever God looks at you.
This
is false doctrine and straight from the pit of HELL.
You
must understand that Jesus Christ says that anyone who makes a habit of sin is
a slave of sin (John 8:34) and this is where the problem of dealing with the
guilt of sin comes in.
Even
when you have confessed sin, the devil would keep trying to remind you of your
sin and the fact that God would never forgive you even for the most heinous sin
you commit but that again is a lie because that is NOT what the Word of God
says in 1 John 1:9.
God’s
Word says God is faithful to forgive us when we repent sincerely and confess
our sins to Him and that He cleanses us from ALL unrighteousness.
So
you cannot allow the devil to continue to torment you into remaining in sin.
Having known that God would forgive you when you repent genuinely and confess
to Him and determine not to sin again and do as you have determined, you must
also forgive yourself whenever you falter.
You
must as stated earlier, daily engage in spiritual activities that edify and
build you up spiritually and then subject your flesh to your spirit by doing
what your spirit says in obedience to God’s commands in the Bible as against
what the flesh tells you to do.
As
long you do this and obey God’s every command, sin would have no place in you
as a habit and you would truly have fellowship with God, the Lord Jesus Christ
and the Holy Spirit every day.
Then
you can be sure that when you depart this world, you would spend eternity in
Heaven where Jesus Christ is and has built you a mansion as His child.
Dear friend, Jesus
Christ is coming shortly to take ONLY those who are qualified according to His
righteous standards in the Holy Bible.
Are you living a genuine life as His disciple? Are
you ready for Him? Come to Jesus today, for tomorrow may be too late for you.
May the good Lord bless you as
you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Righteous
Name, Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
