HONOURING VOWS, PLEDGES, PROMISES AND COMMITMENTS
Deuteronomy 23:21-23 (NIV)
“If
you make a vow to the Lord your
God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord
your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of
sin.
22 But
if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty.
23 Whatever
your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to
the Lord your God with your
own mouth.”
Dear people of God, there are many people in today’s world who
with ease make vows, pledges and promises but fail to honour it.
It is even worse in Church where some people make financial
pledges voluntarily but fail to honour it and believe it has no consequence.
Look again at today’s lead Holy Bible text and you realize that God demands
that we fulfil every vow or pledge made.
Take note also that God says it NOT a sin NOT to make a vow
before God but once you do, you MUST honour it.
Outside Church, many people enter into verbal and written
agreements with others but fail to honour it.
Many make promises to assist a less privileged person but fail
to honour it and forget about keeping their word on the excuse that they don’t
have the money or time to do it.
There are some who make commitments to others but when they fall
out with the person or are angry, still fail to honour such commitments.
Verse 23 of Deuteronomy 23 of God’s Word says whatever your lips
utter you must be sure to do. Take note that this does not apply only to vows
or pledges made before God but every promise or commitment made to your fellow
humans.
Employers of labour especially in Africa and particularly
Nigeria give written agreements (offer letters) to their staff but fail to
honour their obligations when the time comes to do so.
Employees make a promise of allegiance to their employers but
fail to honour it and cut corners believing there are no consequences.
In the political sphere, politicians make many promises to the
electorates prior to entering office but fail to honour it when they take
charge of governance of their nation.
At home, parents make promises to their children but fail to
honour it. Children also make promises to their parents but fail to honour it.
Husbands make pledges and promises to their wives but fail to
honour and vice versa for their wives.
Let me remind you once again about the seriousness before God of
uttering any word at all, and indeed uttering words of promise to another
person and failing to honour your commitment.
Majority of people have this erroneous believe that makes them
classify sin into big sin or small sin and so trivialize the need to honour
their commitments whether verbal or written.
When you fail to honour your commitments, you have lied to the
other party and God’s Word says unequivocally in Revelation 21:8 that ALL LIARS
will go to HELL when they depart this world.
To give an excuse that you were only joking even makes it worse
because it does not exonerate you as a liar who cannot honour commitments.
Dear friend, there are things you have said in the past as a
commitment (financial or otherwise) to someone, a group of people, your spouse,
your kids, your boss, your subordinate, your employees, your colleagues, your
neighbour, your church, your pastor, your congregation, your employer, your
electorates, your parents, your relative, your client, your fiancé, your
fiancée, anyone whosoever.
If you are yet to honour such commitment, do so immediately
without delay before it is too late. If you are unable to do so immediately,
reach out to the person(s) and reschedule or give a proper reason why you are
unable to honour that commitment.
Ask God in prayer to remind you of all such failed commitments
and to help you resolve them and pay attention as the Spirit of God reminds you
as a born-again Christian.
Don’t ever make the mistake of leaving commitments unresolved
because heaven has a record of it against you and be sure it would send you to an
eternal damnation as a liar.
As you read this, don’t think this message is only for
Christians because though it is warning born-again Christians to always honour
every commitment, it applies to every other human being on this planet whether
a Christian or not.
However, even if a non-Christian has a habit of honouring all
commitments, he or she must become a born-again Christian before he or she can
enter heaven because God’s Word says so in John 3:3.
Jesus’ coming for His children in the
Rapture is imminent. Are you His child or are you born again? Are you ready for
Him?
Come to Jesus Christ the Word of God
today and now, for tomorrow or later may be too late for you.
May the good Lord bless you as you
heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Holy Name,
Amen.
