“Therefore, my dearly beloved, shun (keep clear away from, avoid by flight if need be) any sort of idolatry (of loving or venerating anything more than God).”
Dear people of God, in the minds of very many people idolatry is known as the worship of other gods other than the Almighty God and Father of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
This definition is correct; however, I want to draw your attention to today’s lead Holy Bible text above, whether idolatry also means loving or venerating anything more than God.
All Christians need to be aware of this expanded definition for them to examine their lives to see that they are not engaged in idolatry.
I will give a number of examples to buttress my point via questions.
(1) Is it right for a pastor during church service at any time to stop the service to take a phone call?
(2) Is it right for anyone to take his mobile phone into a church service?
(3) Is it right for a Christian to consistently miss Sunday Church because of work?
(4) Should a Christian miss Sunday church because he has an emergency situation at home?
(5) Should a Christian miss Sunday church because of a business meeting?
(6) Should a Christian miss Sunday Church because of a football match?
(7) Is it right for a Christian to miss Sunday Church because of business?
(8) Why should a professed Christian sleep with his or her boss to retain the job or for promotion?
(9) Why should a professed Christian defraud others?
(10) Should a Christian spend all the time focused on the material needs of the family whilst neglecting the family’s spiritual need?
(11) What justifiable reason would a Christian family give for not creating time daily, morning and night to study the Holy Bible and pray together?
(12) What reason do parents have for not engaging their kids in a consistent and deliberate study of God’s Word from a young age of 2 years to build and shape their behaviour as God has commanded in Proverbs 22:6?
(13) What reason does a Christian have for not telling others about the Lord Jesus Christ, Repentance, Salvation, Eternal life, Righteousness, Holy Living, Heaven and Hell as Christ has commanded in Mark 16:15-16?
(14) Where he is able to provide help, is it right for a Christian to neglect to help a person in need?
(15) Why should a Christian pray for his human enemy to die? Does this not violate the instructional message of love and forgiveness Christ preached in Matthew 5:44 and Luke 6:27-28?
(16) Is there any situation where a Christian is justified to pray for the death of another person?
(17) Why should a professed Christian bear false witness against another person to destroy the person’s character and to gain favour?
(18) What excuse does a professed Christian have for failing to pay first fruits, tithes, offerings, and contributions to church projects in propagation of the Gospel of Christ?
While some of these questions appear very hard and difficult to answer, I want to inform you dear friend, that no matter the situation you find yourself, always remember that we have a God Who alone can transform situations.
All we have to do is present our case to God sincerely and ask for His intervention and He would ALWAYS provide the BEST solution.
Dear friend, let us not take God Almighty for granted by having time for other activities and neglecting spiritual activities. The spiritual activities we engage in add nothing to God’s already established greatness but they are simply for our own good.
Whether we like it or not, one day we would depart this world and all other activities would cease.
All that would count then is the spiritual activities we engaged in. No human being can escape this. It is therefore foolhardy for anyone to believe he or she can live anyhow in utter violation of God’s Word and expect to enter heaven at death.
We must have time for God. We must live for Him. We must tell others about Jesus Christ by word and deed. We must let the light of Christ shine through us as Christians to a darkened world of sin and hatred.
We have no choice in this matter to reciprocate love to God in line with His commandments in the Holy Bible because He has first showed us love by creating us into this world, forgiving our sins and then leaving His Glorious Throne in Heaven to come die for our sins to reconcile us back to Him.
Have time for God and teach your children, family members, relatives, neighbours, friends, employees and so on about Jesus Christ using the obedient example of your life to His commandments. It is for your own good.
May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Loving Name, Amen.
Gabriel Ama.
