MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW TESTAMENT (2)

Hebrews 8:6-7 (AMPC)
But as it now is, He [Christ] has acquired a [priestly] ministry which is as much superior and more excellent [than the old] as the covenant (the agreement) of which He is the Mediator (the Arbiter, Agent) is superior and more excellent, [because] it is enacted and rests upon more important (sublimer, higher, and nobler) promises.

7 For if that first covenant had been without defect, there would have been no room for another one or an attempt to institute another one.”

Dear friend, in the first part of this post, we saw a number of major differences between the Old Testament and New Testament.

We saw that the Old Testament was given by God as a law for the Jews practising Judaism whilst the New Testament is given by God as a law for Christians and indeed the entire world.

God expects that all human beings would believe His Word in the Holy Bible, repent of sin, confess sins to Him for forgiveness, forsake sin, accept the Lordship of Jesus Christ as Saviour and Messiah and live in strict obedience to God’s Word in the Holy Bible without compromise.

Now, let us see some more major differences between the Old Testament and New Testament:

(1)  In the Old Testament, Moses gave leave to the Jews to divorce and remarry because of the hardness of their hearts (Matthew 19:8) and not because it was God’s command.

Under the New Testament, there is no ground to divorce and remarry because God has decreed so. This is why I pity pastors and Christians who lie that God commanded them to divorce their wives and remarry someone else.

(2)  Under the Old Testament, humans could not live above sin even though God calls His servants to obey Him. They were expected to obey the law of God but God knew this was not possible because sin still held sway over them.

In the New Testament, however, as a result of Christ’s Sacrificial death on the Cross and the Gift of the Holy Spirit to all Believers, the Holy Spirit guides Christians and warns them directly about sin.

God further tells us in His Word that the person who is joined to Christ at Salvation is born again, a new creation and does not continue to sin or make a habit of sin because whoever does that is of the devil – 1 John 3:6-10.

A Christian is therefore called to a higher standard as a son of God by virtue of believing and accepting Jesus Christ as His Saviour.

(3)  Under the Old Testament, people live by the law but under the New Testament, we live by grace, which is God’s unmerited favour to all mankind and as many who believe and accept the Truth of His Word.

Unfortunately, ignorant people and agents of the devil have taught ignorant Christians to abuse the grace of God and live in sin even whilst professing Christ, thereby endangering their salvation and risking an eternity in HELL.

This is what God says about grace in Titus 2:11-12, For the grace of God (His unmerited favour and blessing) has come forward (appeared) for the deliverance from sin and the eternal salvation for all mankind.

12 It has trained us to reject and renounce all ungodliness (irreligion) and worldly (passionate) desires, to live discreet (temperate, self-controlled), upright, devout (spiritually whole) lives in this present world,”

As you can see, dear friend, the grace of God trains us to live in righteousness and obedience to God’s Word and not a license to sin as agents of satan teach ignorant Christians today.

When you study the Bible, as Jesus says, you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you FREE – John 8:30-32.

(4)  Under the Old Testament, one was told to practise vengeance against an offender and to hate your enemies. Under the New Testament, Christians are commanded to practise love and forgiveness no matter the offence committed against them.

Christians are commanded to pray for those who hurt them and cause them hardship and pain because Christianity is founded on God’s love – Matthew 5:38-39; 43-48.

This again, is why I pity those who pray for the death and destruction of their enemies. This is not Christianity!!!

(5)  Under the Old Testament, God dealt with the Jews and told the prophets to warn the Jews who were violating His commands to repent or face the consequences He had stated to their ancestors.

Under the New Testament, the command is to all Christians, Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers, to go and preach the Gospel or Good News of Repentance and Salvation found ONLY in Jesus Christ, Righteousness and Holiness, Eternity, Heaven and Hell to every Creature in this world.

This message of the Gospel would serve as a witness against all who would harden their hearts against the Truth of God’s Word so that they would not have any excuse on the Day of Judgement when every human’s deeds, good or evil would be brought to light by God.

Dear friend, what God overlooked in the Old Testament times is not what He overlooks in the New Testament because Christians have been saved and sanctified by the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ that was shed for our sins on the Cross of Calvary.

A Christian is called to a higher standard of life and this is why it is very difficult even for a Christian to enter heaven but for the grace of God – 1 Peter 4:17-18.

Unfortunately, many Christians have been misguided by false teachers with a watered down doctrine and are not aware of this and continue to live as though they are still in the Old Testament period.

I must add here that because we don’t live in Old Testament times doesn’t mean we should discard it.

No, No and No!!!

God gave us the Old Testament to show us the history of this world and how the history of religion came until the time of Christ when the New and final covenant was given to all mankind.

This gives credibility to the Holy Bible as a Book that originates from God with a complete history as against any other book out there without any foundation and with flaws.

The Holy Bible is the only flawless Word of God written in complete form and is for all humans to study and know the Truth about their Creator God Almighty and Father of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ – 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

May the good Lord bless you as you heed His Word today, act on it and share with others in Jesus’ Most Precious Name, Amen.

Gabriel Ama.
